Welcome to the Victoria Museum

The finest and most interesting objects from the collections of the Victoria Museum of Egyptian Antiquities are on display in the permanent exhibition 'The Mediterranean & Nile Valley' on the first floor of Museum Gustavianum. The Gustavianum, which is now the University Museum of Uppsala University, was built in the early 1620s to be the main university building and served as a teaching institute until 1996 when the institutions, which were then residing in it (including the Victoria Museum) were moved out to allow for its renovation. The Victoria Museum has since been reinstated into Uppsala University's oldest standing building and is again on public display since the spring of 1998.

The current gallery is arranged along a chronological line from prehistoric to Christian times, and also has thematic exhibitions detailing such areas as life after death, writing and the deities of ancient Egypt. The collections range from fantastic objects such as brightly painted mummy-coffins and linen-wrapped mummies, to more usual things like pottery and other household objects. The exhibition has been designed to meet the demands of the popular science and art public, as well as students and professionals of Egyptology. Welcome to the Victoria Museum of Egyptian Antiquities!
