The Vikings Begin opens in Minneapolis
Turnblad Mansion, American Swedish Institute. The travelling exhibition The Vikings Begin tells the story of how the Viking Age began, and describes how the objects relate to the rest of the world; their spiritual and supernatural connotations; the role of war; the importance of water, waterways and trade routes, and how they affected development. For the third time, the exhibition is now opened, this time at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis.

Gustavianum plans to renovate its building
Gustavianum, Uppsala University Museum, looks after many unique and fragile objects – Egyptian mummies, Roman and Greek collections, archaeological finds from the Viking period, sensitive works of art, delicate scientific instruments from various eras – and much more. All these historic collections must be stored and displayed with care. Air humidity, light and temperature changes are factors that can cause damage and destroy the Museum’s treasures.

Mikael Ahlund becomes Gustavianum’s new Director
Uppsala University has appointed Assistant Professor Mikael Ahlund as new Director for Gustavianum, Uppsala University Museum. Ahlund has a background from, among other museums, Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. In recent years he has been Deputy Director for Gustavianum as well as holding the office of University Antiquarian. The current Director for Gustavianum, Marika Hedin, will take up the post as CEO for Riksbankens Jubileumsfond.

The Vikings Begin continues its journey
The traveling exhibition The Vikings Begin has now reached its last day at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. The exhibition, which is on its two-year exhibition tour in the United States, with a selection of 1,300-year-old items from the pre-Viking era, is now continuing to its second stop Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle.

Opening of the exhibition The Vikings Begin at Mystic Seaport Museum

The public opening was very popular despite the bad weather. Many visitors came to see the magical, mysterious world of the early Vikings be displayed.

The tie has received it's pattern from the floors in the University Mainbuilding. The tie, with the beautiful pattern of the mosaic floors in the University Mainbuildning, is now back in stock again in the Gustavianum University shop.

The exhibition is about the interplay between art and science in the 1600's and 1700's and was opened on April 23rd in the presence of the Japanese imperial couple and the Swedish royal couple.

New acquisitions to the coin cabinet
The coin cabinet has made two new acquisitions this spring. One is from Sicily and dates back to the 400's BC. and the other from Italy from the 400 or 500's.

The exhibition is about the interplay between art and science in the 17th and 18th centuries. The focus is on three well-known Uppsala figures – Olof Rudbeck, Carl Linnaeus and Carl Peter Thunberg.

The Well-Laden Ship: Viking exhibition soon to reach America
Photograph: Daryl Van Essen/Gustavianum In late April, a ship will reach New York with The Vikings Begin, and the exhibition will then embark on a two-year tour of the US. On display will be a selection of 1,300-year-old items from the pre-Viking Age. Usually in storage at Gustavianum in Uppsala, they have never crossed the Atlantic before. But now the mysterious world of the early Vikings is to be revealed to a wider audience, with a premiere at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut in May.

Earth Hour 2018
On Saturday, March 24th, from 20.30-21.30, Gustavianum is taking a stand for the climate by participating in the Earth Hour campaign.

A Sense of Space
‘A Sense of Space’ is an exhibition featuring a selection of works by the English artist Lynne Brown; the exhibition celebrates the purchase by Uppsala University of two of the artist’s paintings, with motifs from Visby and Uppsala. The exhibition will be at the Almedal Library in Visby from March 24th to April 6th, and in the Orangery of the Botanic Garden in Uppsala from October 6th to 21st 2018.
The exhibition is produced by Gustavianum in association with the Almedal Library and the Linnaean Gardens of Uppsala University.

More visitors than ever before at Gustavianum
During 2017, Gustavianum had 90,069 visitors. This is an increase of over 8% compared to 2016. In addition, nearly 1,500 students and researchers have worked in the museum's archaeological and science-historical collections in the archive collections.

Gustavianum och Universitetshusets renovering
Under hösten 2017 återinvigdes Universitetshuset. Renoveringen, som pågått i två år, har i högsta grad involverat Gustavianum. Flera av de samlingar som museet ansvarar för finns representerade i Universitetshuset, som konstsamlingen, myntsamlingen och beståndet av äldre möbler. Renoveringen av byggnaden har bland annat inneburit:
• omfattande förflyttningar av samlingarna
• iordningsställande av omfattande tillfälliga magasin
• betydande renoveringsinsatser av konst, möbler och skulpturer
• genomarbetade återinstallationer av konstverk, möbler och föremål. -

Gustavianum slår besöksrekord igen
Under 2016 hade Gustavianum 82 539 besökare. Därmed slogs förra årets besöksrekord med råge.

Det är roligt att allt fler besöker oss, och dessutom har de unga besökarna blivit fler – både skolungdomar och studenter, säger museichef Marika Hedin.

Ny databas över svensk arkeologisk forskning i Grekland tillgänglig på nätet
I ett nyligen avslutat infrastrukturprojekt vid Svenska institutet i Athen har material från över hundra år av svensk arkeologisk verksamhet i Grekland gjorts tillgängligt för forskning genom databasen PRAGMATA. Databasen innehåller bland annat ett omfattande fotoarkiv och information om en unik arkeologisk samling som förvaltas av Museum Gustavianum vid Uppsala universitet.

Gustavianum is one of the best museums in Sweden
Users of the website Trip Advisor have ranked Gustavianum as the sixth best museum in Sweden and given it the distinction ‘Travellers’ Choice’. Only the Vasa Museum, Skansen, ABBA The Museum, Fotografiska and the Swedish Air Force Museum were rated more highly than Gustaviaum.
